Build a clearer picture of student development

A practical university cohort approach: early project evidence, later work, individual Proof reports and a carefully scoped evaluation of development.

Published 7 November 2026 · Examples are fictional.

Look beyond attendance and confidence.

Academic results matter. A complementary evidence approach asks what a student can explain from a project or placement: their individual contribution, supporting work, limitations and next step. It should not replace grades or turn an incomplete account into a judgement that the student lacks ability.

Use meaningful checkpoints, not constant testing.

  1. Early project: Capture a starting example and identify a practical evidence gap.
  2. Major project or placement: Ask the student to act on one next step and keep permitted work or feedback.
  3. Later review: Compare the original account with new work. For Visible’s current individual beta, one reviewed Proof refresh after 60–90 days is included.

A fictional student journey

Initially, a student says: “I helped with our presentation.” The missing evidence is her individual contribution. She then owns the audience questions for a capstone presentation, rehearses with her supervisor and revises two unclear explanations. At the next review she brings the revised slides and supervisor feedback. That supports a more specific account; it does not establish workplace readiness or guaranteed employment.

What can a university usefully learn?

With appropriate permission and a defined purpose, advisers could identify recurring gaps: students who need help explaining individual contributions, documenting outcomes or turning feedback into action. Use that information to focus careers support and project coaching.

A cohort view is a proposed pilot capability, not a live institutional dashboard. Small groups can be identifiable even without names. Agree access, minimum group sizes, suppression rules and retention before sharing aggregate findings.

Evaluate the pilot before expanding it.

Measure completion effort, adviser usefulness, clarity of student examples and whether later work supports a more specific account. Keep student feedback separate from independent evidence. Do not claim Visible caused better grades, employment or capability growth from a before-and-after questionnaire alone.

The proposed founding pilot starts with one cohort and an agreed scope. Review the current eight-week pilot proposal. Dates, capacity, permissions and any later follow-up need agreement before enrolment.
